HERPKEEP

Privacy policy

Last updated 27 October 2026

Herpkeep is a logbook and care library for people who keep reptiles and amphibians. This policy explains exactly what we store, why, and how you delete it. Short version: we keep your account and the records you enter so they sync between your devices; we don't track you, show ads, sell data or use analytics.

What we store and why

DataWhyHow long
Email addressYour sign-in, password reset codes, and a notice if your email is changedUntil you delete your account
Display nameThe greeting in the app and the default name on your sitter care cardsUntil you delete your account
PasswordSign-in. We store only a one-way hash, never the password itselfUntil you delete your account
Your records: animals, enclosures, equipment, care logs, temperature and humidity readings, reminders, and vet contacts you saveThe app's purpose — keeping your logbook and syncing it between your iPhone and iPad; your private insights page; your sitter care cardsUntil you delete them or your account
Animal photos you addYour animal profiles and, if you allow it, your sitter care cards. Photos are re-encoded and all location and camera metadata is removedUntil you remove them or delete your account

Backups of the database are kept for 14 days and then overwritten.

What we don't collect

No advertising identifiers, no analytics or tracking of any kind, no contacts, no health data about you. Location: when you use “Find an exotics vet”, your location is used on your device with Apple Maps to show vets near you; it is never sent to us. We store only a vet you choose to save, as text. Camera: when you scan a thermometer display, the numbers are read on your device and only the reading you save is stored; the image is not kept or uploaded. A profile photo you take is uploaded only when you save it to an animal. On-device summaries: on devices with Apple Intelligence, vet-visit summaries are written by Apple's on-device model; your records are not sent to us or anyone else for this.

Who else sees your data

Nobody, except the services that run Herpkeep for us: our hosting provider (stores the service and its database) and an email delivery service (sends password reset codes). We don't sell or share your data. A sitter care card is visible only to people you give its link to; it is hidden from search engines, expires on its own, and you can turn it off in the app at any time.

Deleting your data

In the app: Keeper → Account → Delete account. This immediately and permanently deletes your account and everything in it — animals, logs, readings, photos, reminders, vets and care cards — from our servers, and removes it from the device. Deleting a single record in the app deletes it on all your devices.

Children

Herpkeep is not directed at children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect their data.
